Recovery

Let me just start off by saying that I am still on my high from the half marathon...BUT no one ever told me that the recovery was going to be this bad!

I am in sooo much pain, it's ridiculous! Sunday after the race both of my hips were hurting...it felt like, well, it felt like I had just run a half marathon! By Monday morning, I COULD NOT MOVE. AT ALL. I'm not kidding. My legs were so tight, they felt like they were in a constant state of contraction. I put my compression socks on right after the race, and made sure that I wore them all the way until Tuesday afternoon, so my calves didn't hurt too much...but, my thighs and quads are just TERRIBLE.

I was scheduled to work Monday night. I texted my charge nurse to beg her (literally BEG) to work triage that night. (At triage, I basically take vital signs and sit all night). I told her that I had run a half marathon the day before and I was in pain. There was no way that I was gonna be able to work the floor Monday night. She had compassion, and I was able to get somewhat of a break that night. I could barely move. Everyone was laughing at how slow I was moving. I got home Tuesday morning, and slept until the early afternoon. When I woke up, I was still tight and sore, but it was sooooo much better. Now it just feels like I've done a hard work out.

I know that RnR Dallas was a bit hilly for the first 6 or so miles...so I'm thinking that is what caused most of the pain that I'm having now...I haven't really done much hill training.

So, did you guys hurt this much after your first half marathon?

  1. ah, sorry for so much pain....yikes! I've never run more than 5 miles, so I couldn't tell you but I can say that your blog is SUPER motivational for me to ONE DAY ATTEMPT the 13.1 as you just did :)

  3. I'm sorry recovery has been so rough. It scares me about my first half because you have the highest pain tolerance of anyone I know so if you are in pain then I know it's bad. Feel better soon bestie! Luv ya

  4. After my first half marathon I took about 2 weeks off and was still a little sore, but was not too bad! I understand completely! Kristen, I would suggest taking a hot bath (as hot as you can stand it) and soak in that for about 30 minutes or a little longer if you want and then whenever you get out, stretch your legs as best you can. I had to do that and that is what a friend of mine suggested when I was hurting really bad! It worked wonders on me! Also, if you have a foam roller or rolling pin, use that on your legs, it will help.

Casey, you will be fine! Don't worry! I am jealous you will be running in Disney. I want to run a race there one day!

  5. I actually typed up this post a few days ago, when I was hurting pretty badly. Today I feel GREAT!

I think that the hot bath helped me the most along with stretching.

Casey, no worries! You will hurt...but the pain is sooooooo worth it!
